Detectives reveal that they are closing in on Maddy kidnapper And new witness tells of seeing her with TWO suspects in van

Detectives hunting for Madeleine McCann last night said they were closing in on her kidnapper in a dramatic breakthrough in the case.

Francisco Marco, head of private detective agency Metodo 3 - hired to track the missing four-year-old by the McCanns - said: "We're 100 per cent sure she is alive. We are sure she was abducted. We are very, very close to finding the kidnapper."

He said a woman had come forward with vital new information.

The member of the public claims she saw a little girl matching Madeleine's description inside a stationary van in central Portugal two days after she was snatched.

The girl was sitting next to a woman while a man stood outside the vehicle, at a spot about 90 miles from where Madeleine went missing in Praia da Luz, Portugal.

The witness then picked out the woman suspect from photographs shown to her by investigators at the Spanish firm Metodo 3 as the woman had already been linked to the case. The man seen by the van has the same description as the suspect the McCanns' friend Jane Tanner saw carrying Madeleine away from their apartment on May 3.

And it's believed a THIRD man was also involved, acting as a spotter who watched the McCanns' routine of checking on their children during their week-long holiday.

Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry were last night praying the sighting on May 5 would help bring their daughter back.

A friend said: "They're encouraged by what investigators are saying and have been given new hope."

Mr Marco and his 40-strong expert team were hired by the McCanns two months ago as they became frustrated by the bungled Portuguese police investigation.

He believes Madeleine was abducted in a carefully planned operation, says he knows the area she is being held and insists the agency is close to discovering exactly what happened to her.

Marco, 45, refuses to say which country they think Madeleine is in, although Kate and Gerry have always been convinced it is Morocco.

The Sunday Mirror has been told the identities of all three suspects but has chosen not to print them so as not to jeopardise the inquiry.

A source inside Metodo 3 said: "We believe the sighting is the breakthrough we've been waiting for. The witness was able to give a detailed description of the man and woman to investigators.

"They showed her photographs, and she was able to pick out the woman with no hesitation.

"Detectives believe the kidnapper was helped by a third person who watched the apartment for days."

The McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell said last night: "Gerry and Kate will not comment on specific sightings, but are continuing to work closely with and have every confidence in Metodo 3."

The development comes as Gerry told of his belief Madeleine was snatched by a "predator" after the family was watched for days.

In a video diary to be screened on BBC1's Panorama, he says: "I've no doubt Madeleine was targeted and that makes us sick to the core to think someone was watching us and our daughter, then targeted her. I think the true word is a predator."

Kate and Gerry, both 39, left Madeleine and two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie sleeping in their apartment every night while they ate at a Tapas bar from which they could see the back of the flats.

Gerry believes the kidnapper lay beneath the children's bedroom window, hidden by a high wall.

In the film - shot by family friend John Corner as suspicion began to fall on them in August - he says: "We were looking at the back of the apartment and maybe the weak spots were at the front.

"It's a corner flat with trees overlooking it. Somebody could be hiding there watching out of view."

He adds: "I've absolutely no doubt that they've watched me go in, come back out, and then they've thought, 'That's the window of opportunity'.

"And you know a minute or two either side, and obviously one other witness saw him carrying a child away, but not realising it was Madeleine - that could have been a matter of 20 or 30 seconds and that's very frustrating."

A US documentary will also claim Portuguese police no longer believe Kate and Gerry - who are still official suspects - were involved in their daughter's disappearance and that DNA evidence is inconclusive.

'We know who's got Maddie'

The News of the World

DETECTIVES hired by Maddie McCann's parents are CERTAIN she's still alive and they're close to finding her.

The Spanish-based Metodo 3 agency also believe they know the identity of the missing four-year-old's kidnappers and are on the verge of solving the entire case.

Boss Francisco Marco told us said: "We're 100 PER CENT sure Maddie is alive. We're sure she was abducted and we are very, very close to finding those responsible."

The specialist investigators group, who have never failed to find a missing child, are working on the theory that THREE people were involved in the snatch after a new witness came forward.

The witness claims to have seen Maddie being bundled into a van by a man and a woman in central Portugal TWO DAYS after she was taken.

The news comes as Maddie's troubled dad Gerry has told how he is certain she was taken by "a predator" who had watched the family for DAYS.

In an emotional home video diary recorded some months ago, Gerry says he believes the abductor hid in the dark outside their Portuguese holiday apartment before grabbing Maddie from her bed.

On the video, filmed by a friend and to be screened by the BBC tomorrow night, doctor Gerry reveals: "I've no doubt Madeleine was targeted. That makes us sick to the core-to think that someone was watching us and our daughter."

He says he thinks the kidnapper was HIDING at the front of the flat in Praia da Luz as he checked on his children that fateful evening.

He adds: "I've absolutely no doubt they've watched me go in, come back out and then they've thought, 'That's the window of opportunity to get in and get back out'."

Gerry's theory backs our front page story last month that Metodo 3 believed Maddie was snatched to order in a paedophile plot.

The video also shatters Portuguese police theories that the McCanns could have dumped Maddie's body during a trip to Spain.

It shows the boot of their hired Renault Scenic, where cops suspect the body was hidden, was actually full of missing posters and yellow armbands on that day in August. Pictures taken from the video also show Gerry sitting at his computer working on posters, and Kate hanging out washing.

On video Kate reveals her regret at leaving her children that night. She says: "There is not a day goes by I'm not thinking, 'Why did I think that was OK?' "

Shock claim by McCanns' private eyes

DETECTIVES hired by Maddie McCann's parents are CERTAIN she's still alive and they are close to finding her.

The Spanish-based Metodo 3 agency also believe they know the identity of the missing four- year-old's kidnappers and say they are on the verge of solving the entire case.

Boss Francisco Marco told us: "We're 100 PER CENT sure Maddie is alive. We're sure she was abducted and we are very, very close to finding those responsible."

The investigators, who have never failed to find a missing child, are working on the theory that THREE people were involved in the snatch after a new witness came forward.

The witness claims she saw Maddie being bundled into a van by a man and a woman in central Portugal TWO DAYS after she was taken.

Taken

It is not known if she was a local resident or a holidaymaker.

On the video, to be screened by the BBC tomorrow night, doctor Gerry reveals: "I've no doubt Madeleine was targeted.

"That makes us sick to the core-to think that someone was watching us and our daughter."

Until now Gerry has been banned from discussing the investigation under Portuguese law. But he is captured on the private video saying he thinks the kidnapper was HIDING at the front of the flat in Praia da Luz as he checked on his children that fateful evening. He added: "We were looking at the back of the apartment and maybe the weak spots were at the front.

"It's a corner flat with trees overlooking it. Somebody could be hiding there watching out of view. I've absolutely no doubt they've watched me go in, come back out and then they've thought, 'That's the window of opportunity to get in and get back out'."

Gerry's theory backs our front page story last month that Metodo 3 believed Maddie was snatched to order in a paedophile plot.

On the video, filmed by friend John Corner, Gerry reveals he desperately wishes he could turn back time. "Looking back could destroy you, eat away at you." he says.

"We have very much tried to focus on what more could be done now, not what we could have done before, because we didn't do it.

"If we could turn back the clock, we'd just rewind as fast as we could."

The video also shatters police theories that the McCanns could have dumped Maddie's body during a trip to Spain.

It shows the boot of their hired Renault Scenic, where cops suspect the body was hidden, was actually full of missing posters and yellow armbands on that day in August. Pictures taken from the video also show Gerry sitting at his computer working on posters, and Kate hanging out washing.

On video Kate, 39, reveals her regret at leaving her children that night.

She says: "There is not a day goes by I'm not thinking, 'Why did I think that was OK?' "

Gerry, also 39, added: "Clearly at the time we felt what we were doing was quite responsible. We talked earlier on about how rare it is for a foreign child to be abducted and of course Praia du Luz is such a quiet place it was the furthest thing from our minds.

"We were dining very close to the children and we were checking on them very, very regularly. We are very responsible parents and we love our children so much."

Friend of McCanns 'scared to tell truth'

Nov 13, 2007
Daily Mail

A friend of Kate and Gerry McCann wants to 'reveal the whole truth' about the case but is frightened of the couple's political allies, a lawyer claimed yesterday. One of the so-called Tapas Nine wants to help Portuguese police with the six-month investigation but 'feels obliged to keep silent', according to the unnamed source.

The lawyer attacked the intervention of 'certain politicians' in the case and said they had prejudiced the hunt to discover what really happened to Madeleine McCann. Gordon Brown and Foreign Secretary David Miliband both spoke to the couple directly before the McCanns were made official suspects in the case.  Direct contact stopped when they were made arguidos in September but the Premier has been briefed on the case since then and raised it with his Portuguese counterpart last month.

Maddie DNA clue

Evidence found on clothes may be profile of abductor

POLICE believe they may have found vital DNA left by the abductor of missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann.

It was taken from strands of hair discovered in a bag of clothes dumped at a Portuguese roadside-which also held a green child's T-shirt with DNA links to Maddie.

The hairs were on an adult's blue fleece and a pair of jeans.

Detectives are now checking all known Portuguese child sex offenders, trying to link the DNA with a name.

Police sources in Portugal last night described the news as a significant breakthrough.

One said:
"DNA was found on the clothes that didn't match Madeleine's. This is a big step forward.

"The bag could have huge significance because it could finally give us a trail that could lead us to her."
Last week we revealed how the white carrier bag was found in a lay-by near Faro airport, about 50 miles from the resort of Praia da Luz where Maddie disappeared on May 3 The clothes inside were tested at a UK forensic lab in Birmingham. Its report shows two hairs contained sufficient information to compile a strong DNA profile.

Police are now working on the theory that whoever dumped the bag-which also contained a pink and blue pencil case with heart motif-could have snatched Maddie.

Meanwhile, mystery fingerprints found on shutters of the McCann family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz have finally been identified-and they belong to A COP.

Bungling police wasted weeks checking this clue before British experts asked if they had eliminated all the police.

Officers who attended the scene were eventually rounded up and fingerprinted, revealing the culprit's identity.

MADDIE'S distraught parents Kate and Gerry McCann are preparing to be quizzed "any day" by Portuguese cops.

Detectives are expected to travel to Leicestershire soon to re-interview the couple.

They will also quiz close pals dubbed the Tapas Seven, who dined in a restaurant with the couple on the night Maddie vanished.

Madeleine McCann's parents are preparing to be re-interviewed by Portuguese police.

Detectives are due to fly to Leicester within the next few weeks to go over statements made by Kate and Gerry.

Officers leading the inquiry claim the McCanns refused to answer 40 key questions about their daughter's disappearance after they were made "arguidos" - official suspects.

But the McCanns, both 39, deny they refused to cooperate and said they are only too willing to face another grilling over what happened the night Madeleine went missing from their holiday apartment in Praia da Luz.

The couple told a friend: "We're ready to face the Portuguese police. We will answer everything they have to ask us because we are innocent. What we want to say to them is 'bring it on'."

Paulo Rebelo, the detective leading the inquiry, and two colleagues plan to re-interview the couple once a Birmingham laboratory has sent them the remaining DNA test results on blood and hair samples taken from the McCanns' Algarve apartment and hire car.

A judicial insider told Portuguese newspaper 24 Horas yesterday: "These DNA tests are key to helping us advance the investigation."

Last night Kate and Gerry faced fresh criticism in a book on Madeleine's disappearance by two Portuguese journalists.

The book - called Maddie 129 after the number of days Kate and Gerry spent in Portugal - claimed Kate faked the kidnap of Madeleine.

Police will wind up case after their incompetence destroys all DNA evidence

PORTUGUESE detectives investigating Madeleine McCann's disappearance plan to close the case by CHRISTMAS. Police have admitted that "unless a new piece of evidence falls out of the sky" the hunt will be wrapped up in a matter of weeks. A source inside Portuguese police told the Sunday Mirror how they believe the four-year-old will never be found - and are satisfied for the shadow of suspicion to hang over the McCanns.

Nanny tells of man in bushes outside Maddie flat

A nanny has told investigators she saw a man lurking in bushes outside the holiday apartment where Madeleine McCann disappeared.

The woman was babysitting a boy of six in apartment 5A of the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz MONTHS before the McCanns stayed there.

But her description appears to MATCH that given by a friend holidaying with the family who is convinced she saw sleeping Madeleine being carried away.
