A close family friend of the McCanns said yesterday she was shocked that parents Gerry and Kate had been questioned about Madeleine's disappearance.
Katriona Fernandez, from Dungloe, Co Donegal, said: "It is unbelievable what is happening to the McCanns.
"I know the family really well and for the life of me I don't know how the police have come up with this idea.
"I know Gerry for about 15 years as his parents and my parents are very good friends.
"I have met his wife Kate a couple of times and they are both lovely people.
"I don't know what evidence the police have but I would be prepared to put my neck on the line and say there is no way they would have something to do with Madeleine's disappearance.
"Honestly I don't know about the evidence but I find it hard to believe the police have anything on them to prove they did something to their daughter."
Irish people raised EUR44,500 for the Madeleine McCann fund which was run by Katriona. The cash was being used to help Madeleine's parents Gerry and Kate stay in Portugal as the hunt continues for the four-year-old.
Katriona said: "We collected a lot of money and I hope despite the turn the case has taken people who donated believe it was the right thing to do."
