KATE and Gerry McCann have been warned not to go back to Portugal for the anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance. Lawyers have told them that to return on May 3 may be risky as they remain official suspects over the four-year-old's disappearance. There are fears it might provoke demands for them to be quizzed by police again. A friend of the couple admitted last night that their continuing "arguido" status had taken away the parents' "freedom of choice".
The pal said: "The lawyers are being cautious but there is a possibility they may be called in. The anniversary would be a circus. It is sad because Portugal is where Kate feels closest to Madeleine." It is likely relatives will go to Praia da Luz for the anniversary instead.
POLICE were last night investigating an arson attack in Praia da Luz on the car of Sergei Malinka, 22 - a friend of Madeleine suspect Robert Murat. The Portuguese word for "talk" was sprayed in red paint on the pavement.
