British detectives are investigating a secretive paedophile internet network over encrypted messages about Madeleine McCann. Police, alongside intelligence experts and the McCanns' own investigators, are probing a series of posts made about the youngster on a sickos' web forum.

In the posts - which have been seen by the Daily Star Sunday - the perverts revel in describing abuse missing Maddie may have suffered. Chillingly, they also talk of her being "deleted" and "offed". Other sick messages on the site - which is heavily encrypted - include talk of drugging and killing children. And concealed behind names such as "Lolitrixlover" and "justinsa2008" the perverts appear to post without fear of being caught.

But detectives are determined to crack the codes. Both Leicestershire Police - Madeleine's local force - and the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre are involved. A CEOP spokeswoman said: "Our experts will try and find out where these people are located." Much of the material is too disgusting to publish.

As well as talk about Madeleine, who was three when she vanished from Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007, the online perverts also discuss the case of missing 12-year-old American girl Lindsey Baum, from McCleary, Washington State. An internet crime expert who uncovered the site said: "The content is horrific. Whoever these people are, they need to be caught." Detectives from Scotland Yard are also expected to study the material.

Prime Minister David Cameron declared last week that the Yard will launch a new investigation into the Madeleine case. Last night it was announced that Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, from the Met's elite Homicide and Serious Crime Command, will head the new probe. The crack detective is an expert in cold case reviews and previously snared killer Miguel da Silva 15 years after he strangled Susan Martin, 44, in Notting Hill, west London, in 1994.

Meanwhile it is hoped Kate McCann's book on the case, which went on sale last week, will generate new leads. The McCanns, from Rothley, Leics, have been busy doing interviews to try to boost sales. On Friday they gave an interview on the Late Late Show in Ireland. But they faced an awkward moment when host Ryan Tubridy claimed a "section of the audience" suspected the McCanns of involvement in Maddie's disappearance. Gerry, 42, said: "Read the book" before Kate, 43, replied: "Everything is in there."

Thousands of British police files detailing the hunt for Madeleine McCann will not be released unless those behind her disappearance are brought to justice, it emerged today. Senior Leicestershire Police officers have remained tight-lipped about their role co-ordinating the search for the toddler since she vanished from a Portuguese holiday resort in May 2007. But analysts at the force have drawn up a list detailing the mass of information they have gathered and considered whether they would ever release any of it to the general public. A businessman whose firm helped to look for Madeleine McCann was arrested after a hotel manager recognised him as an alleged fraudster wanted by US authorities. Kevin Halligen, 48, had been staying at the Old Bank Hotel in Oxford for several months under an assumed name. He was arrested there yesterday following a discrepancy over his hotel bill. The hotel manager had seen a newspaper report last weekend concerning the alleged fraud and realised the man pictured alongside the article was his customer. Halligen was taken into custody in the city, where he remains today. The US Department of Justice had issued an indictment for Halligen, from Surrey, earlier this month, alleging he tried to defraud a London law firm of 2.1 million dollars (£1.2 million).

Kevin Halligen, whose firm helped look for Madeleine McCann and who is wanted in the US over an alleged £1.3 million fraud, appeared in court tonight after being arrested on an extradition warrant. Thames Valley Police said in a statement: "We arrested a 48-year-old man yesterday morning at the Old Bank Hotel in Oxford. It was a discrepancy over his hotel bill." He is being held in custody in the city, and it is understood a court hearing relating to an extradition matter could take place later today.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson is prepared to ask US spy chiefs for satellite images which may show the face of Madeleine McCann’s kidnapper, following intervention by the Sunday Express. Hope of new progress came after it emerged Leicestershire Police never made a formal request to the Home Office for views of Praia da Luz on Portugal’s Algarve at the time the little girl vanished in May 2007. The quality of pictures taken by satellites in space is now so good they can reputedly identify the colour of someone’s eyes.

An elite team of ex-cops and secret agents are spearheading a new hunt for Madeleine McCann. The veteran investigators have been hired by missing Maddie's desperate parents Gerry and Kate. The 12 crack former Scotland Yard detectives and MI5 and MI6 agents have been secretly on the ground in Portugal for weeks chasing any new leads which may help to find her. The group was recruited over the past few months after Portuguese cops announced they had shelved their inquiry into Maddie's disappearance.

Ex-cops approached for hunt

Some of Britain’s most experienced police detectives are being approached to join a team to help find Madeleine McCann. The Find Madeleine Fund has asked for lists of suitable retired or soon-to-retire officers from forces across the country. The fund, which is now being bankrolled by Brian Kennedy, owner of Sale Sharks rugby team, has approached several police forces around the country, including Greater Manchester. Madeleine, 3, of Rothley, Leicestershire, disappeared from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May last year.

Top former detectives from Greater Manchester Police could be recruited to help find Madeleine McCann. Chief Supt Steve Heywood, head of the force's serious crime division, has been asked to provide a list of retired or about-to-retire officers. Madeleine was snatched while on holiday in Portugal just a few days before her fourth birthday in May last year. The Find Madeleine Fund was set up with help from individual donations and is now being bankrolled by Brian Kennedy, boss of Sale Sharks rugby union club.

British police failed to stop DNA evidence in McCann case from being made public

British police officers were yesterday accused of trying to stop DNA information allegedly linked to Kate and Gerry McCann’s hire car from being made public. The claim was made in a Portuguese newspaper after Midlands detectives travelled to Portugal to meet the public prosecutor involved in the investigation into the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine. Under the headline ‘English in Portimao to Protect Secrecy’, the newspaper Correio da Manha claimed two Leicestershire officers tried to stop information – including results of a DNA test on a sample from the McCanns’ Renault Scenic hire car – from being made public.

A judge yesterday begged Madeleine McCann's abductor to 'show mercy and come forward'. In an astonishing plea, Mrs Justice Hogg called for an end to Kate and Gerry McCann's 14 months of suffering and said she prayed Madeleine would be found alive soon. The British High Court judge gave the couple fresh hope in the hunt for their missing daughter by ordering British police to hand over a dossier containing the details of 81 potential witnesses. She said Leicestershire Police should pass on information about those who had tried to contact the McCanns in the immediate aftermath of their daughter's disappearance in Portugal days before her fourth birthday.

The Prime Minister, who has been an influential supporter of the couple, has previously persuaded the Portuguese authorities to release details of their investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance from an Algarve holiday apartment 138 days ago.

Expat Mr Smith was leaving a bar in the resort with his family at about 9.50pm when he saw a man carrying a small child past the church in the centre of the town. It was about 20 minutes after Madeleine is believed to have been snatched from her bedroom 500 metres away. Mr Smith said the man was walking close to the flat of Sergei Malinka, a 22-year-old Russian web designer who had worked for suspect Robert Murat. He described the man as being about 5’ 7” tall, and wearing beige trousers, with the clothes on his upper body obscured by the child he was carrying.
